Fleas

Characteristics:
Adult fleas are about 1/8 of an inch long, brownish-black in colour, and after a blood meal reddish-black. The body is laterally flattened allows it to easily move through an animal hair. They also have small transverse spines, which projected backwards allows them to hold and host onto the hair of your pets. These small transverse spines make it hard to remove fleas from your pets enabling themselves to be transported from room to room or pet to pet, biting, irritating and breeding where ever they go.

Habits:
Fleas in general require warm humid conditions and develop large populations. Usually during wet spring and summer months large outbreaks occur. As the fleas eggs can lay dormant in and around the home, It is most common when people return from holiday's a silent home become noisy causing flea eggs to hatch.

Lifecycle
The adult female can lay 4-8 eggs after a blood feed. Many hundreds can be laid in a life time. Most eggs are laid on a host and usually fall off, they can be distributed in virtually all areas visited by the host. Flea eggs are more abundant around animal sleeping quarters. Eggs usually hatch in 2-14 days and the larvae feed on available organic material such as crumbs, human skin scales, and debris that may accumulate mostly furniture, carpets, pets bedding, cracks between floorboards, lawns and under buildings.

The feeding period for flea larvae is usually 15 days. The larva spins a silken cocoon, to which it will adhere to particles of dust, soil. The larva pupates in the cocoon and the life cycle can take as little as 18 days and / or up to a year in less favourable conditions. Adults can live up to 500 days and will endure long periods without food.
